Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) started as a law student in London, but success eluded him in his own country, so he went to practice law in South Africa in 1893. There he immediately ran into the racial discrimination that we would later know as apartheid, and that caused him to develop the philosophy that governed the rest of his life.
