Little, Brown & Company. $26.95. he parents of the baby-boom generation raised an unusually large number of children to very high standards of health, education and psychological care. By the middle of the 1960's their principal parental work was done. At the same time a host of social and sexual innovations attracted the attention of these parents and their time. The sexual revolution was a compound of effective and safe contraception controlled by women and a broad relaxation of the stern certainties and firm moralities that had marked the 50's. The result was a period of great turbulence in both personal and public lives. Astonishing sexual opportunities -- even obligations -- emerged. Not only did contraception sharply reduce the possible consequences of pre-, extra- and postmarital sex, but legal decisions about freedom of expression removed what appeared to be nearly all censorship of public and artistic dialogue about sexual experience. Compared with the three preceding decades, the 60's were astonishingly colorful and tumultuous at the point where public norms and private passions meet. Some onlookers thought the world was ending. Some participants were convinced that it was just beginning. It was difficult for anyone to be indifferent to what was happening.
