Plants of Viñales: a pictorial guide - Guazuma ulmifolia Tree 12-20 m high; bark bright grey to dark brown; leaves 6-15 cm long, 2-6.5 cm wide, oblong, ovate-oblong to narrowly ovate; apex pointed to acuminate; base deeply heart-shaped, asymmetric; margin serrate; glabrous and lustrous on upperside, pubescent on underside; petioles short, 0.8-2.5 cm long, tomentose; inflorescence dense, fragrant; pedicels 4.5 mm long, pubescent; flowers small; sepals 3-4 mm long, 2 mm wide, yellow to yellow-brown when fresh; apendices 4 mm long, 0.5 mm wide; staminal column 2 mm long; stigma globose, 1 mm long, pubescent; stigma with 1-5 grooves; capsule hairless, globose to ovoid, 2-4 cm long, green to black when fresh, covered with hard tubercles, irregular dehiscence; seeds numerous, ovoid.
