Description: Takes a look at the relationship between XML and CORBA and explores the topic of versioning.
Object Interconnections: CORBA and XML, Part 1: Versioning | Dr Dobb's Object Interconnections: CORBA and XML, Part 1: Versioning Some of the excitement surrounding XML is pure hype, and some of the purest hype says that XML will do away with CORBA. Not so fast. First of all, XML has none of CORBA's built-in networking capabilities, the sort of capabilities that make CORBA a great distributed application platform. Second, CORBA and XML are not even competing technologies. In fact, they complement each other quite well. CORBA is a standard for invoking distributed objects; XML is a standard for describing data. The authors demonstrate an area where CORBA and XML are especially symbiotic: in creating versionable components. CORBA provides the component capabilities, and XML provides the versioning. If we don't get swayed by the hype, we may just get the best of both worlds.
