Description: Publication dedicated to outrigger paddling. Includes news, race schedules and results from round the globe.
At the end of the 20th century, pre-internet, to get our race results we'd buy a newspaper and find it buried in the sports section. This was the only coverage the sport got until October when the BANKOH Molokai Hoe race was held. We outrigger paddlers needed our own magazine because there was more to paddling than that one race. Ron Cotteen, who had introduced me to paddling, was confident paddlers would like a magazine all about paddling. A magazine for paddlers by paddlers. Ron sold ads and even got some agency business. I took care of content and the print side. By the following issue, we had a photographer, Joss Descouteau who had moved to Hawaii from Canada & wanted to 'shoot' water sports, and he wasn't afraid to put himself in front of a charging 400- pound canoe or jump in the water where the 'grey suits' swim. We soon learned that there is little money in publishing, and Ron and Joss went on to start their own successful businesses. Joss is now a fashion photographer, and Ron, along with Eric Phillips, opened a paddling store, Island Paddler (with two locations).
