Description: Positive review of the home stadium of the Johnson City Cardinals.
Howard Johnson Field - Johnson City, Tennessee Howard Johnson Field is home to the Johnson City Cardinals of the Appalachian League. This is certainly one of the best parks in the league. It is small, cozy, unique, and features a small covered grandstand. There are a couple hundred box seats but most of the seating is aluminum benches, some of it with backs. The seats are extremely close to the field, and on a typical night almost every word the players and umps say can be heard from the stands. The concourse area is located behind the covered grandstand and houses the souvenir stand (known as the "Bird Cage") and the concession stand. Prices are extremely inexpensive ($1 sodas, $1 peanuts, $1.50 hot dogs) as could be expected at such a low level of the minors. What make this park unique, though, is the 15 foot bank in right field in front of the fence. It is quite a site to watch a player climb this hill to try to catch a fly ball. It certainly makes for an interesting experience anytime the ball is hit there. Unfortunately, the hill was removed after the 2010 season. There are only a couple of on-field promotions besides the usual lucky numbers. The only disappointment was the failure to sing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" during the 7th Inning Stretch. Other than this, it is a great place to take in a minor league game.
