The was drafted in 1531 by the German theologian Johannes Oecolampadius, who presented it to the Synod of Basel in 1534. It represented a compromise between the doctrines of Martin Luther and those of the Swiss theologian Huldreich Zwingli. The confession remained in effect until 1872.
