The Gospel of Matthew - an introduction for preachers This introduction to Matthew has in mind people who will be using Matthew regularly for preaching. In it I approach Matthew by looking at the opening 5 chapters, where most of the important themes of Matthew already appear or are at least foreshadowed. I begin by looking at Matthew as a whole, then focus on the early chapters as a group, then turn to the individual passages, treating them in three blocks: 1. The Birth Narratives (Matt 1-2); 2. John the Baptist and Jesus (Matt 3-4); 3. The Beginning of the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 4:23 - 5:48).
