Traditional Latin Mass | Catholic Church Colorado Springs Today is Sexagesima Sunday and the second of the three Sundays in this short liturgical season of Septuagesima which is the Church’s preparation for Lent. This season emphasizes the need for a good examination of conscience which will help us recognize the evil in our lives and encourage us to combat these vices by means of the penitential practices of prayer and fasting during Lent. This past week reminded us of original sin and the story of Adam and Eve and their sons Cain and Abel. This coming week concentrates on that other kind of sin which we ourselves commit called actual sin. The Divine Office in its readings tells the story of Noah and how the actual sins of the people had become so evil that God “regretted that he had made man …†and that he would “…wipe from the earth man…†whom he had created. We learn from these lessons the wickedness of sin and its terrible consequences for each of us. This awareness will help us make a good Lent.
