It was founded by Joseph Smith the first President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The city lies on the bend of the Mississippi river in west central Illinois. With all that going on the Prophet Joseph had the members of the church build a Temple. The Temple was the largest building in Illinois at that time, and a beautiful site to see standing on the top of the hill in this great city.
