Description: Entry by Brian Leftow on the doctrine that God cannot undergo real change.
Immutability (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) First published Mon Jul 1, 2002; substantive revision Thu Apr 7, 2011 The doctrine of divine immutability (DDI) asserts that God cannot undergo real or intrinsic change in any respect. To understand the doctrine, then, we must first understand these kinds of change. Both “intrinsic” and “real” (in the relevant sense) are hard notions to elucidate. I cannot here attempt anything like a full account of them. I instead provide very rough characterizations, which would be acceptable on a wide variety of competing accounts of these notions.
