Celebrating the Fourth of July at The Holiday Zone On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. Four days later, on July 8, 1776, colonists gathered in Philadelphia to hear the Declaration read. Afterward, they celebrated the national's first "Independence Day." In the years that followed, citizens across America celebrated their hard-won freedom July 4. Not until 1941, however, was the Fourth of July set aside as a national holiday.
