Description: Maier's November 16, 1997 review of Ketchum's book on Saratoga.
Everything changed for the Americans after the victory at Saratoga. Turning Point of America's Revolutionary War. Henry Holt & Company. $30. he story Richard M. Ketchum tells is, on the face of it, a conventional military history of a major campaign in the Revolutionary War, but ''Saratoga'' also has some qualities of an old-fashioned western movie. Much of the action is in Vermont, still a frontier territory, or nearby parts of New York that Ketchum describes as ''mean, rough country.'' There were occasional farms, streams that ''seemed to go nowhere,'' dense woodlands and roads that were often little more than broadened paths. Packhorses and oxcarts traveling over one such road had first to be unladen, Ketchum reports, or the animals ''would have been up to their bellies in mud.''
