Description: The story of Jim Begent of the Royal Naval Division, including his service in Belgium and escape from a POW camp.
Jim Begent - Memories of the RNVR in the 1st World War My grandfather Jim Begent served in the Royal Naval during the 1st World War. He was in the Royal Naval Division (RND) sent in 1914 by Churchill to Belgium to try and stop the advancing Germans. This was at a time before the trenches when cavalry officers rode on horse back. The British were forced to retreat and Jim escaped to neutral Holland where he was interned. Wearing civilian clothes smuggled in Red-cross parcels and with a forged pass hidden in a tennis ball he escaped, and hiding in the propellor shaft of a ship he made it back to England. He returned to the Navy, went to the Dardanelles and served on ships in artic convoys. In the 2nd World War he was an Air Raid Warden in London during the Blitz.
