Description:This program chronicles the lives and clashes of military leader Admiral Leighton Smith and the well-known diplomat Richard Holbrooke. From Vietnam to the Balkans, each man has had to engage the issue of when, where, and how U.S. military force will be used. In the Balkans, they came into direct conflict over the role and responsibilities of the U.S. military in securing and maintaining the peace. Richard Holbrooke, architect of the Dayton Peace Accords, represents the new idea of America¼s role in the world, a kind of moral foreign policy, a forceful projection of American ideals in places where U.S. strategic interests are not necessarily apparent. Admiral Smith is a military leader, who is loyal to his life-experiences and ever-mindful of the limits and risks of U.S. military might.
