Description: Account of the service on Iwo Jima of the 386th Air Service Group, VII Fighter Command, US Army Air Force. The 386th supported the 4th Marine Division and 15th Fighter Group on missions in the Pacific and over Japan.

This website has been developed for the family, friends, and men of the 386th ASG and all those appreciative of the men and women that sacrificed a part of their lives assuring that freedom and our way of life could continue. This website celebrates just one very small part of the struggle that was WWII. While doing research for the site, I found that the 386th ASG was a microcosm of the whole, and portrayed the willingness of the service people to do more than just the job that they had been trained to do.

| Description: | The 386th Air Service Group (386th asg) of the VII Fighter Command, Army Air Force, served at Iwo Jima. The 386th included the 490th Air Engineering Squadron and 611th Materiel Squadron. During the Battle for Iwo Jima, the 386th supported the 5th Marine Division by transporting supplies and wounded marines. The 386th prepared airfields and provided full support to pilots of the 15th Fighter Group, who flew P-51 Mustangs, P-61 Black Widow Nightfighters and other fighter aircraft that escorted B-29s on bombing runs over Japan. The 386th also started Iwo Jima University, in which the men organized to teach each other, and obtained college credit for some courses. |
