Prior to this rather active role in our nation's history, he was a scalawag who spent his time stealing from everyone, including his own relatives. Hoping to ingratiate himself with the powers that be, Guiteau proclaimed himself available for the consulship to Vienna. Not hearing a reply, he moved to Washington, and spent a great deal of time hanging around, and then outside, the White House trying to convince Garfield that he was exactly the sort of man this nation needed to represent itself abroad. He took his rejection rather harshly, and shot Garfield to death some months later. But he was real funny before he did so.
