Eugene Victor Debs (1855 - 1926) - Find A Grave Memorial Socialist Presidential Candidate, Political Figure. He ran for the office of President of the United States five times as a Socialist (1900, 1904, 1908, 1912, and 1920), and was serving a sentence in an Atlanta prison when he ran the last time. He was convicted of espionage for a speech he made at Canton, Ohio on June 16th, 1918 against the United States participating in the World War. He had recieved over a million votes in that election. After the winner of that race, Warren G. Harding, took the office of the President of the United States, he pardoned Debs, who was released on December 25th, 1921. The last four years of his life were devoted to reform of U.S. prisons. When he died he was buried in the cemetery where the family plot was, but the family kept the location of his grave a secret. His wife was afraid of grave robbers stealing her husbands body.
