And I suspect it is not so different today. For anyone nurtured on Homer, the spirit seeks an heroic enlargement. The Greek is not dwarfed by his fate; he becomes his fate. Never in Greek art in any period does the individual sink into the background and become overwhelmed by the surrounding world. Everywhere the heroic type swells into the foreground, absorbs the world around him, and transforms it - be it death itself - he does not lose his being, nor ever allow it to be insignificant. Of all that Greece has bequeathed to the world, nothing is more central or important than this concept of the hero. And however much the Greeks may differ among themselves - and they differ a good deal sometimes - there is one thing they regularly have in common, and can always recognize in each other. When a heroic deed is done, they know it. The collective security of Hellas is the community of heroic aspiration. ' I am tired of all this talk about the standard of living. What I should like to hear about is a standard of dying.' By such feelings have the Greeks rejected materialism, and sought the essence of their culture in the lonely spiritual recourse of the hero, whose ultimate standard is death with honor."
