[...] said Detective Don Hrycyk of the Los Angeles Police Department's art theft detail, 14 or 15 galleries have been hit, most of them in California. The Orange County Sheriff's Department released a surveillance video yesterday that shows two men stealing a sculpture valued at about $10,000 from a Mission Viejo art gallery last week. Hrycyk said the thieves also recently took a $45, 000 sculpture in a smash and grab at a San Diego gallery and, on Sept. 12, a $14,500 Wilkinson statue was stolen from the Nese Gallery in Newport Beach. The problem has grown so severe that Los Angeles police and the FBI have organized a task force to try to track them down. The videotapes of the suspects in Mission Viejo were obtained because Kaleidoscope Gallery owner Ed Bolin installed a $15,000 security system after a theft last month. |
