With a keen insight of the natural world, Michael pursued formal art studies. A 1972 graduate of Central Washington University, Michael earned a bachelor degree in fine art and education. In the spring of 1972, Michael was off to the Fort Knox Armor School for basic training with the Washington Army National Guard. Upon his return Michael was employed by the Walla Walla, Washington public school district, where he taught art.
