It quickly allows occupants to evacuate a property when the primary (and often only) other means of escape is no longer available. Most houses only have a single staircase down to the ground floor and if a fire starts downstairs, primarily the kitchen or lounge areas this escape route can easily be blocked by both fire and often more crucially toxic fumes and smoke. Jumping from a first or second storey window is sometimes the only other means of evacuation and can cause terrible injury or even death.
