The U.S. mint began designing fifty-cent pieces in 1794; therefore, the Flowing Hair Half-Dollar is America’s first Half Dollar design, which was produced by Robert Scot. The mintage for this Flowing Hair Half Dollar was 23,464, not a low mintage when compared to other coins in that era. However, most were used extensively; high grade examples are elusive. While NGC has graded double digits in every grade up to and including extra fine, only 2 have been graded AU55, with only 14 TOTAL in all grades AU50-58. This specimen is classified as an Overton 101 which is thought to be one of the last of the issue to be coined, probably in the 18,164 pieces produced by the mint in early 1795. High grades were used for jewelry; very popular in early America, and, being the first year, many had never seen one before. The suggested PCGS price for this coin is $140,000. Truly an American treasure!
