In a non-binding resolution adopted today, the European Parliament has taken a first step to a substantial improvement of the Commission’s proposal for a 2030 climate and energy framework. On 22nd January, the European Commission proposed a 40% GHG emission reduction target only, accompanied by an EU-wide target of 27% RES which would be non-binding on Member States. EGEC welcomes the Parliament’s call for additional targets for renewables (30%) and energy efficiency (40%). According to MEPs, these targets should be binding and implemented through individual national targets, taking account of each member state’s situation and potential.
