GEN. GOETHALS DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS Builder of Panama Canal and Once Ruler of the Isthmus Succumbs Here at 70. His Feat Hailed as One of the Greatest in History--West Point Funeral Tuesday. Major Gen. George Washington Goethals, builder of the Panama Canal and first Civil Governor of the Panama Canal Zone, died yesterday noon in his apartment, 12 East Eighty-sixth Street, at the age of 70. He had been in ill health from a complication of diseases for eight months, although this was not generally known. He was unconscious for twenty-four hours before his death.
