Genes, the author argues, are merely bit players in the game of life. Illustrated. 186 pp. Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press. $22.95. hen James D. Watson and Francis Crick unraveled the mysteries of DNA half a century ago, the unexpected simplicity of inheritance was one of its most compelling features. As Crick remarked, ''DNA makes RNA, RNA makes protein and proteins make us.'' Until recently we could only marvel at the process. Now we have the potential to direct it. Designer babies and gene therapy are set to follow in the wake of the Human Genome Project. Genetically modified crops promise better nutrition or environmental contamination, depending on one's point of view. Genes have achieved iconic status and, it seems, the capacity to change every aspect of our lives.
