Description: George Page reviews 'Wild Minds: What Animals Really Think' by Marc D. Hauser.
A noted psychologist and neurologist examines animal communication. By Marc D. Hauser. Illustrated by Ted Dewan. Henry Holt & Company. $25. t is usually noteworthy when an author who has made important contributions to a scientific subject attempts to write a popular book about it. Lewis Thomas's ''Lives of a Cell,'' for example, is a wonderfully readable classic. Occasionally, however, the scientist turned writer fails. I would argue that this was the case even with Stephen Hawking's best seller, ''A Brief History of Time.'' As important as it was, I suspect it may have been one of the most bought but unread books in the history of publishing. Most readers without a serious background in physics found it tough going indeed.
