Underground, they do the hidden preparation necessary to make a tender spring rebirth possible. We may think nothing is happening during the dormant season but active biological processes are, indeed, taking place. Persephone must serve her six months in the underworld. Then she returns and graces the earth with her fertility and splendor. We, as human beings, could take a lesson from the plant kingdom. Plants have perfected the art and practice of deep rest. Dormancy for them is just the other side of growth.
