Description: John Durant reviews 'Darwin's Ghost: The Origin of Species Updated' by Steve Jones.
A geneticist tracks the evolution of Darwinian theory through the discoveries of modern science. ''The Origin of Species'' Updated. ublishers don't always spot winners. Faced with the manuscript of a new book by Charles Darwin in 1859, John Murray took advice from a reader who was distinctly unimpressed by the author's chosen focus: the origins of organic diversity. Darwin would do better, he suggested, with a manual on pigeon-fancying: ''Everyone is interested in pigeons,'' he commented. ''The book would be reviewed in every journal in the kingdom; and would soon be on every library table.'' Needless to say, Darwin ignored this advice, but Murray, it seems, did not. For although he eventually accepted Darwin's book on Darwin's terms, he went ahead with an extremely modest edition of just 1,250 copies of ''On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life.''
