Description: An essay on the history and current status of Japanese archaeology.
Ancient period     Medieval period     Early Modern period     Modern period Japanese archaeology is defined as the archaeological study of past cultures in the present Japanese islands. In fact, most Japanese archaeologists study only the archaeology of Japan, and only a small percentage of the more than 5,500 Japanese archaeologists do any or all of their work abroad. Although a small number of non-Japanese do their major research on Japan's past, these non-Japanese archaeologists rarely live pemanently in Japan; most spend only a year or two in the country for PhD research, later followed up by occasional visits.
