Welcome to the Communication Theory Research Group Communication Theory Research Group The field of communication theory is devoted to the design of digital communications systems. At its core is the mathematics that underlies the traditional physical-layer functions of modulation, coding, equalization and synchronization. As such, it involves a mix of information theory, digital signal processing, and applied mathematics. In recent years, the scope of communication theory has broadened to encompass multiple users as well; thus modern communication theory provides a physical-layer view of many seemingly network-related concepts such as interference, multiple-access, contention, relaying, and cooperation. Although a relatively young field, its impact is already widespread; advances in communication theory have made possible deep-space telemetry, high-speed wireless local-area networks, and cellular telephony.
