Description: Information on how gastropods become fossilized and photographs of a number of fossil specimens from the London clay of the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, UK.
Gastropod casts can be found very commonly amongst the pyrite accumulations on the beach. It is very difficult to identify most of the species from the casts. When the gastropods begin to wash from the clay after a fall, they often retain their shells, however within one or two tides, the shell is damaged and washed away. The shell is filled with pyrite, so when the shell is completely gone, all that remains is the cast. Finding specimens in the condition of those illustrated is very difficult, so that when found are highly prized by collectors of London clay fauna.
