Description: Article by Mike Samworth describing this feature with a microscopic image of the mouthparts of Calliphora vomitoria.
The fly proboscis as a microscopical object. The fly probscis is a familiar object to many microscopists. Whether this be due to distant memories of studying the mouthparts at school or owning a slide bearing the mouthparts is immaterial. However, whilst we recognise such an object, as in all studies of living creatures there is much to be learnt by careful observation and it is well worth getting that slide out for a closer, longer look. In this article I hope to give some idea of the proboscis in structure as well as cover some other aspects.
