Description: Provides a list of all the species included in the orders Bacillariales, Biddulphiales, Coscinodiscales, Fragilariales and Rhizosoleniales.
Many microalgal groups, including diatoms, are in a state of taxonomic flux due to advances in optical science and, particularly, genetic analysis. Whereas in the 19th century diatoms were considered to consist of one family, by the mid-20th century they were assumed to be a single class, Bacillariophyceae, with two orders, Centrales and Pennales.
