Fossil Evidence for Root Parasites ( Late Triassic Tropical Rift Basin, Central Pangaea The time of angiosperm origin still eludes botanists. During the past four decades several hypotheses have been proposed. Two became so supported by data and popular among paleobotanists that they were elevated to theories: The Cretaceous Origin and Primary Radiation Theory and the Anthophyte Theory of Angiosperm Origin, which extended angiosperm evolution back to the Early Mesozoic. Recently molecular biology falsified the Anthophyte Theory, and provided additional support for earlier molecular studies that angiosperms have been independent of extant gymnosperms back to their roots in the Devonian and Carboniferous. Molecular data have also caused a revolution in the theoretical phylogenetic hierarchy of angiosperms, changing botanical concepts about the most primitive living angiosperms.
