Mollusks Page 1 - Keys to the Aquatic Biota of the Hawaiian Islands The diversity of mollusks is not very great in freshwaters, but increases in brackish and estuarine waters, and is tremendous in marine waters. The major molluscan subgroups found in fresh and brackish waters are snails (Class Gastropoda) and clams and mussels (Class Pelecypoda or Bivalvia).
