Description: Description and classification.
Escallonia rubra {Escalloniaceae} Red Escallonia This Chilean species has flowers of a deeper color and firmer texture than any other species, and is the dominant parent of most hybrid escallonias. Always shrubby and multi-stemmed, it varies greatly in the wild in stature as well as in leaves and flowers, and several forms have been introduced to gardens. Some shrubs are delicate and small, with small leaves and arching sprays of flowers with narrow red tubes and pale pink, recurved tips. Escallonia rubra var. macrantha is a vigorous, large shrub up to 10 ft (3 m) tall with succulent, glossy leaves and tight clusters of white to pink and sometimes crimson flowers.
