Plants of Viñales: a pictorial guide - Erythroxylum areolatum Bush 1-6 m; leaves oblong to obovate, slim, 5-13 cm long, 3-5.5 cm wide, obtuse and sometimes emarginate at the apex, elongated or nearly cuneate at the base, pallid green on the underside, lateral veins anastomosing;; underside with areoles in two lines parallel to midrib; petiole 4-6 mm; stipules 2 mm; pedicels fasciculate; flowers appearing before or with the leaves, fragrant; calyx 2 mm, with pointed lobes; petals 2-3 mm, oblong; drupe 6-9 mm, obtuse at both ends.
