Click on an image to view larger version & data in a new window Earwigs or Dermaptera constitute a comparatively small order of insects comprising about 1800 species. Their scientific name refers to the leathery fore wing (dermatos: skin, pteron: wing, both words of Greek origin) and was given by de Geer in 1773. However, he used the name for all orthopteroids. It was Kirby in 1815 who introduced the name in the modern sense.
