Description: General information and classification.
Brassia verrucosa {Orchidaceae} The most popular member of the genus in cultivation, this species makes a clump of elongated pseudobulbs with leaves up to 18 in (45 cm) long and 2 in (5 cm) wide, above which horizontally arching flower spikes about 24 in (60 cm) long arise in early summer. The flowers are greenish white or cream with petals and sepals up to 6 in (15 cm) long, darker spotted at their base and on the short triangular labellum. They are very fragrant, though the heavy, spicy perfume that develops as they age is not to everyone’s liking.
