Photograph by R. E. Halling, © 1998 This bolete is allied with members of the group that forms ectomycorrhizae with oaks, viz. B. aestivalis, B. aereus, B. quercicola, . It differs in its pileus colors and brown stipe with brown reticulum. Also, the tomentose pileus surface becomes finely areolate over the disc and the tomentum agglutinates into ridges on the margin. Currently known from the west slope of Volcan Poas and near Cerro de la Muerte.
