Thomas, a researcher then employed by the Missouri Botanical Garden, has been shown by the National Cancer Institute to have possible activity against HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. The active compound, a dimeric alkaloid called michellamine B, has shown great promise against both HIV-I and HIV-2.
