Description: Articles on DNA methylation as a generator of mutations and a mechanism of aging. Includes research interests of author in Moscow, Russia.
Hereditary information in all organisms on the Earth is coded in genes by four letters of the genetic alphabet. 60 years ago, the fifth letter (5-methylcytosine, 5mC) was discovered in DNA, it arises as a result of cytosine modification by a special family of enzymes. At present, the DNA methylation reaction seems to be almost completely investigated, except for the main point: the biological role of this genome modification continues to be one of the oldest and most intriguing mysteries in molecular genetics.
