Ventura County Astronomical Society - Main Page The Ventura County Astronomical Society is a non-profit, educational and scientific organization that has been in existence since 1971. The brightest emission nebula in the sky is high in the south on February nights at 8 pm. Orion Nebula has the Messier Number M-42/43, cataloged by Charles Messier in the late 1700's. The glow can be detected by the unaided eye centered in the "sword" of Orion, just below Orion's famous "belt." Binoculars can easily find the patchy glow of nebulosity. But even a small telescope reveals the structure, detail and a tint of lime green color! The four stars in the center of the cloud are called the "Trapezium", young stars that formed from the primordial hydrogen, making the Orion Nebula as a "Star Nursery." The dark notch is the "Fish's Mouth," a dark area where young infrared stars are forming. There is enough hydrogen in this nebula to form at least 10,000 sun masses!
