Commercial Greenhouse Production Easter lilies are indigenous to the southern islands of the Liu-Chiu Archipelago of southern Japan. The area where Easter Lilies grow naturally is a rocky sea coast with alkaline soils and weather conditions similar to the southeastern U.S. Easter lilies were first collected by Carl Peter Thunberg in 1777, and bulbs were sent to England is 1819. Sailors and missionaries introduced bulbs into gardens of Bermuda. By 1930, bulbs were being imported from Japan and Bermuda into the Pacific Northwest of the U.S.
