Norfolk Island - Bloodless Genocide A Political History of the Pitcairn People in Norfolk Island from 1856 to 1996 - Captain Carteret of His Britannic Majesty's "Swallow" discovered an uninhabited island he called "Pitcairn's" after the young man who first spotted it. He recorded its position at 25 degrees 2 minutes South latitude and 133 degrees 30 minutes West longitude. The latitude figure was more or less correct, but the actual longitude of Pitcairn's Island (as it was originally called) is 130 degrees West. The name was later shortened to Pitcairn Island, no possessive.
