While the adult life of Tilahun was always in the public domain, his early years were not well known. Born in Addis Ababa, Tilahun grew in Welisso with his grandparents. He later ran away to Dire Dawa in his early teens. Encouraged by his Sudanese headmaster at the elementary school in Welisso, Tilahun discovers his calling at an early age and - once again - runs away from his grandparent's home to Addis Ababa at the age of 16. Married at least seven times (he admits only five) and fathering at least 14 kids, Tilahun left a huge legacy. Undoubtedly, Tilahun remains to be the most beloved Ethiopian musician of all times.
