Liungman and published by ABC-CLIO in 1991 (ISBN 0-87436-610-0), a reference text whose dual purpose is to document symbology in Western human culture and to serve as a tool for those who work with ideograms. This 596-page volume reads more like an encyclopedia than like a dictionary, since in many cases historical information and anecdotes complement the definitions. In fact many symbols represented are thousands of years old, taken from popular cave drawings or as characters of ancient pictographic languages.
