Pekingese were the constant companions of the Chinese Emperor, and as he made his way to the audience room in the Forbidden City, many of the dogs led the procession announcing his arrival with sharp little barks. This was a cue for all lesser mortals to avert their faces. More little dogs followed the Emperor holding their heads high and carrying in their mouths the train of his Royal robes. These little dogs were held with such affection and esteem by their masters that they were often given titles such as "Viceroy" or Imperial Guardsmen.
