Picardy Wines - for lovers of fine wine Autumn Newsletter April 2013, by Max VeenHuyzen“Whenever people ask me to name my favourite Australian winery, I immediately start thinking of four names to round off a top five. I want to prove I’ve at least given the question some serious thought. As a cellar big on white Picardy cartons will attest, few wineries are able to deliver on quality, interest and value with the consistency of the Pannell family. In my mind, it’s impossible to overstate the contribution made by Bill, Sandra and Dan Pannell towards oenology and viticulture in Western Australia. Personally, they’ve been very generous with their knowledge (and cellar) and, on occasion, even allowed a pen-pushing city slicker like myself to get amongst it during vintage. These short stints are as invaluable for furthering my own grape-based knowledge as they are for adding to my repertoire of one-liners and foreign swear words. While I’m loath to use the latter unless pushed, it’s a pleasure – and indeed, honour – to be able to share my thoughts on the current suite of Picardy new releases.â€
